An enriched, dynamic curriculum
From a child’s perspective the transition from Reception to the Pre-Prep is a seamless one. As the children move into Year 1 a more formal style of learning is introduced.
Numeracy and literacy skills form the bedrock of our teaching as it is through these areas that the children can then access the wide-ranging curriculum on offer.
Our broad and creative curriculum is designed to give all our children a thorough grounding in the core subjects of Literacy and Numeracy as well as the Arts, Humanities and Sport.
We promote high levels of achievement and effort and encourage pupils to take pride and greater responsibility in their work, building confidence and resilience along the way with regular assemblies where the children’s efforts and achievements are celebrated.

Year 1
Literacy lessons are supplemented with phonics and spelling sessions and fine motor skills continue to be developed through discrete handwriting lessons.
There is a focus on subject-based learning that includes cross-curricular activities and the children are encouraged to be increasingly independent. Ongoing assessment takes place regularly making sure that the children are challenged and stretched whilst supported when needed.
Year 2
Children continue to develop their creative writing skills, maximising their growing vocabulary and understanding of early grammatical concepts.
They continue to enjoy solving real-life maths problems applying what they have learnt and demonstrating their knowledge and understanding. We promote high levels of effort and achievement and encourage our pupils to take pride and a greater responsibility in their work, building confidence and resilience as they prepare for the move to Prep in Year 3.

CURRICULUM
Inspiring a passion for learning
Hendon Prep aims to create a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for all learners in Pre-Prep.
This is achieved through structured inquiry and the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, conceptual development and understanding, the demonstration of positive attitudes, and the ability to take socially responsible action.
Pre-Prep pupils follow the National Curriculum here at Hendon Prep, however we encourage our children to go beyond expectations with most working between 12 and 18 months ahead.
Creative arts and educational trips enhance the curriculum, which continues to be enriched by subject specialist teaching in Art and DT, Music, French and PE and from Year 1 we also add Spanish to the curriculum, also taught by a subject specialist.
Pre-Prep children will also study Science, History, Geography, RE and PHSE and from Year 2 we add both Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning to the curriculum.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR
A dynamic programme of extra-curricular activities to broaden experiences
As part of our commitment to extend and broaden our children’s experience at Hendon Prep we offer a dynamic programme of extra-curricular activities.
Our clubs and activities are continually evolving and have included such activities as construction club, story-telling and drama, football, drawing, netball, hand bells, board games, ICT, Greek, Spanish, chess and library clubs.
Drama and Music also thrive at Hendon Prep where many children take individual instrumental lessons, join the choir or take LAMDA lessons.
Give your child the best possible start
Our children learn in an environment where they feel represented and included. Our broad and creative curriculum challenges pupils to think critically, develop curiosity, confidence, and independence, ensuring that they are prepared for whatever they encounter, in school and beyond.
